After an intensive day we are now back at the hotel. We´ve been in meetings with companies for our journey in Canada, and the last meeting was with the president for the Canadian Quaich society, Ed Patrick. A very  polite gentleman who has a hugh interest and knowledge of the whisky world.
The first day was extremely interesting and we are so looking forward to the rest of the week!

On the walk back to the hotel we passed by a local church and the sign said;

So... let´s dream! ;)

Whiskygreetings,

Bye Bye Jonathan!

Today we had a farewell after work for Jonathan (as you may know he's leaving for NY). We tried to do it with an American touch; budweiser, oreos, snickers and M&M's and of course with the newbie in US: Mackmyra Swedish Whisky!

Cheers!

I'LL TAKE MANHATTAN

Text by our guest blogger Steve Trygg

Last Thursday, March 17, in the name of the patron saint of Ireland – we’re talking the second half of the 5th century, folks – New York put away a little more beer and whisky than usual.  Well, a lot more.  It was, of course, the annual Celtic spring rites of St. Patrick’s Day.

Steve (left, in Guinness shirt) ready to party

The sky was baby blue.  Crocus out in full bloom in Central Park.  Girls in flimsy tops and teeny shorts.  (Guys, too, to be fair.)  Silly hats and other adornments in the compulsory Erin-Go-Bragh green everywhere.

New York’s Finest (the cops) and New York’s Bravest (the firefighters) together with assorted Irish societies and clubs marched up Fifth Avenue to the sound of bagpipes, drums, and fifes.  Lots and lots of them.  Quite a spectacle.  And the bars and pubs offered standing room only, if that.

There are three genuine Irish pubs within a two-block radius from my Upper West Side home: The Emerald Inn on Columbus Avenue and Malachy’s and P D O’Hurley’s on 72nd Street, proudly displaying the three-leaf Shamrock in their windows.  I visited all of them on St. Patrick’s Day; let’s call it marketing.

Not long ago, Mackmyra, through the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce in New York, asked me to help guide their steps when making landfall in Manhattan.  I was delighted.  I’ve lived and worked in the United States for 28 years, and this must be one of my most interesting challenges to date.  (And I’ve seen them all, believe me.)

"Belly up to the bar, lads!"
As I said, I paid a visit to each one of my three local outposts of County Cork.  The scene was the same – everything that you can picture in your mind, and more.  A jostling, rowdy crowd.  Loud music.  Brisket, cabbage, and potatoes.  Spilled beer.  Shouting.  Laughing.  Spontaneous Riverdancing by – underage? – girls.  Toothless senior citizens in the corners, smiling and sipping Jameson or Tullamore Dew.  Off-duty band members in kilts and bearskin hats and with drumsticks tucked into their knee-high socks.  A few serious men with green sashes pronouncing their membership in AOH (The Ancient Order of Hibernians).  Soccer hooligan look-alikes belting out “Danny Boy” and “The Wild Rover” miles off key.  More spilled beer.  Sweat.  Friendly Pardon me’s.

The first year ever I experienced St. Patrick’s Day in a New York pub, I thought to myself, this must be what it’s like for an Irishman to be thrown into a Swedish crayfish party at around eleven PM.

Let's call it market research
Just for the heck of it, I braved the din and asked all three bartenders and a couple of waitresses for a Mackmyra.  Straight up, please!  What did you want, son?  A Mackmyra whisky! I shouted back.  Sorry, never heard of it!  Well, now you have!  What is it then?  Single malt Swedish whisky!  Bring me a bottle, lad, and this Bushmill’s on the house!  Thanks, will do!!

I walked home with “Whisky in the jar” ringing in my ears, content that at least five Manhattanites now had heard the name of Sweden’s next great export.  This will be fun.  Onwards, Christian soldiers!

Here come's The Emerald Society band marching up Fifth Avenue

Footnote:

Steve Trygg has signed on as a non-compensated mentor to Mackmyra’s US team.
He is the only Swede in Wall Street Journal's prestigious "Advertising Hall of Fame", having built his reputation on marketing campaigns for world-brand clients like Agfa, Dow, Ericsson, Microsoft, NCR, SAP, and Sony, among others.

Cheers!

We wish you all a nice weekend and for you out there that still don’t have the possibility to toast in Mackmyra - please be patient!

Here is a photo from when Mackmyra took a tour to the equator with one of our devoted ambassador´s!

Lots of whisky greetings

The clock is ticking…

Everything is moving fast forward, which is perfect at this moment.

Jonathan signed a contract for a nice, small apartment at Upper East in NY yesterday and we are all leaving Sweden at the end of march.

First stop is Canada. We will be in Toronto for a couple of days and then fly over to Montreal. After that we will end the journey i NY where I and Rikard will leave Jonathan to his new NY-life! Poor Jonathan will be left alone in the big apple to meet the spring and spread Mackmyra to the citizens ;)

Right now  are we also working hard to figure how we should launch our cask concept to the rest of the world, we only have a limited edition of casks so it´s kind of tricky - we want to go wide but can’t offer as many cask as we want to... so who will be the lucky ones and how do we find them?  Well, the future will tell..

All the best,
Sanna

UNIQUE LABEL!

We must say that we've had an interesting journey towards our launch in the US, it has take a little longer than expected and why is that?

US have another law regarding Single Malt Whisky comparing to Europe. The American law says that we can’t use Single Malt as a statement on the labels because we are not using 100 % virgin casks (none distillery can fulfill this today).

We are one of few distilleries in the world that use virgin casks at all (our Swedish oak). When the law was written, there were only distilleries in Scotland and Ireland (outside of US) and they received a exception.  That’s why our labels are different than in Europe, but it’s of course the same award-winning content.

Our labels in US says MACKMYRA SWEDISH WHISKY or as we call it, SWISKY :)

Have a great weekend!

Our new Distillery - with a breathtaking view!

Yesterday we took our Design agency Pond to Gävle for a roundtrip.

We started at our historical (!) distillery at Mackmyra Bruk were we met Hans who guided us through the process. It´s always a special feeling to wear the hairnet, the coat and the beautiful shoecovers.

Fredrik from Pond looked happy though! ;)

After a perfect guiding from Hans and a fragrance of our raw whisky continued our journey to Teknikparken for lunch and a storyguide togheter with Jonas Berg, one of the founders and the constructor of the new Gravity distillery. He told us how the idea of our own whisky village came up and how the vision became more and more real. He is a really good storyteller and the team from Pond seemed enchanted and had a lot of interesting questions. Unfortunately we were short of time otherwise we could had stayed there for a couple of hours just chatter.

Next stop was the Whisky Village were Susanne met us - she is the one who has the answers to everything about the village and also the one you always get the biggest smile in the world from! We were all thrilled to see the new Gravity distilley (I had only seen it on the webcam at this stage) and we took the temporary elevator 37 meters up in the sky - and it was high and very shaky! If you want a hint of how high up it actually was - check this video from the elevator:

When we finally were on the top the view were absolutely breathtaking!

The day ended with candy and coffee in the temporary visitor center. A beautiful day full of inspiration for the future!

Our whisky is on its way to US!

Our first shipment contaning 4212 bottles of the first edition are now heading for US. The bottles are now at the Atlantic sea and expected to arrive March 17 to New Jersey harbour. I will be there to cath up with the bottles and plan to stay in New York for a couple of month so that we get a flying start. We will start to launch our whisky in New York and New Jersey but of course we wan't everyone to be able to get a bottle or two no matter where you live in the states.

We now need your help to spread the word that Mackmyra is on its way to US.

To be continued...

Whisky Greetings
